I have received many e-mails from listeners that include the following pleas:

"My coworker has been battling Lupus and is now in kidney failure and in need of a kidney transplant. She is a fantastic dispatcher, a wife and mother. She's loud and outgoing and strong. She has such a powerful impact on others that her best friend and co worker has organized a benefit to help raise money to defray the medical costs. I never realised even after insurance how astronomical they are. I complain about my $15 copay and the other day she told me about a check she wrote for a doctors visit that was $800 AFTER insurance."

"My brother in law has been diagnosed with renal failure. He is now
doing the at home dialysis. He and my sister do not have insurance, so it's been very difficult for them to take all the steps in a timely fashion."

And these are just a couple of the many that come in. I understand the fear and frustration since I am a Kidney Transplant Recipient, having received the life-saving organ from my cousin, Pam Price, in 2002. At the time I was lucky enough to have good insurance, but any career and financial decision I make throughout my life now has to take my medical condition into consideration.

But as you've read, others are not as financially fortunate as I was and that is why I partnered with Piedmont Hospital, the hospital that saved my life, to create the MELISSA CARTER TRANSPLANT FUND.
